How it is worked out

Net burn is monthly costs minus monthly revenue. Runway is cash divided by net burn: $60,000 of cash at a $5,000 net burn is 12 months.

If revenue covers your costs, net burn is zero or less and there is no end date. The calculator assumes costs and revenue stay where they are; growth or new hires change the answer, so run it again when they change.

Questions

How do I calculate runway?
Divide the cash you have by your net burn, which is monthly costs minus monthly revenue.
What is the difference between gross and net burn?
Gross burn is everything you spend in a month. Net burn takes your revenue off that. Runway uses net burn.
How much runway should a startup have?
Enough to reach your next milestone with time to spare: profitability, or the point where you raise or cut costs. The calculator shows the months; the target is yours to set.
